If there’s no light, you’d better have some luck...
December 2019, Berlin

7:00AM in Berlin sounded like a great idea... until I walked outside...
I arrived for 5 days of dog photoshoots, and for my first session I scheduled a client for 7:00 in the morning. The funny part? In Israel this actually made perfect sense. December, 7:00 AM, beautiful soft morning light, empty locations... perfect for photos.
Small problem, Berlin is not Israel, and apparently the German sun likes to sleep a little longer.
I woke up, grabbed my camera, walked outside the hotel, and immediately realized something was wrong. It was completely dark. Not “beautiful sunrise light” dark... more like “why am I outside in the middle of the night?” dark. And just as a reminder, I don’t use flashes. Ever. Just my camera and lenses.
So I met my client and tried to look like a professional photographer who totally knows what he’s doing, while inside my head I was basically screaming: “I have no light. What now?”
So obviously I did what every experienced photographer does... I started walking confidently while secretly hoping for a miracle.
And then I saw a Christmas market. Closed, empty, but with all the beautiful lights still on. So of course I immediately said something like: “Perfect! The market is still closed now, so we can use all these amazing lights without people around. That’s exactly why I wanted to start here.”
Complete lie!
Luckily for me, the dog was amazing, stayed perfectly still, and somehow with a very slow shutter speed, high ISO, and a lot more luck than brains, we created a gallery I’m still really proud of today.
Even when you have absolutely no idea what you’re doing, just walk confidently enough and make everyone believe this was the plan all along.
